Austrians Abroad Award

On the occasion of his 70th birthday, the Executive Board of the Committee 400,000 bestowed the Austrians Abroad Award upon the former Secretary General of the Socialist International, Hans Janitschek.

Mr. Janitschek, who celebrated his birthday on November 6, 2004, comes from a Viennese family of teachers and studied Law at the University of Vienna. He spent two years at Haverford College in Pennsylvania on a Fulbright scholarship. After his return to Austria in 1955, he worked for the U.S. news agency, United Press. As a journalist based in New York since 1977, Mr. Janitschek currently writes for the Austrian daily, Die Neue Kronen Zeitung.

Mr. Janitschek is the author of four biographies, on Mario Soares, Oscar Arias, Hans Dichand and Arnold Schwarzenegger. He serves as President of the UN Society of Writers and Artists. As Secretary General of the Commitee 400,000, he fought for the right to vote for Austrians living abroad.
